it's official, Shepard Fairey makes Shepard Fairey look like a plagiarist, and makes Banksy look legit.

i started to and couldn't finish that article the first time it got posted here and i can't finish it this time either..

its so fucking obvious that fairey borrows from old propaganda. it's a given, it's part of the art, it's what makes his art 'work.'
ripping on farey for using old images is like ripping on lord of the rings because it 'steals' from the wagner's ring cycle. or on clapton for plagiarizing the fender stratocaster sound.

it's an homage. it's the way we work today. it's what a young albrecht durer would have done 500 years ago had he the technology

its the last 100 years of machine copy culture.

it's conversation

it's fizzy mountain duet

and banksy steals images from everywhere too.

so what?
he's a plagiarizer! get him, him! he's not 'authentic'! whatever that means

finish that article and you might see the difference in what you're describing and what Fairey does. I've always given him the benefit of the doubt when I've heard others dis him. And I wasn't fully convinced that he was a plagiarist until I finish reading that entire article. It's not an accusation to be taken lightly and that is the reason the article is so extensive. If one is going to make those claims they have to back it up. And the author of the article convincingly backs it up, and even address the sentiments that you've just expressed and explains why that's not what Fairey is doing.

that link you posted of Banksy is a great example of what you're talking about. He is recontextualizing those images to take on a totally new meaning. And it does just that.

Fairey time after time after time merely takes old images and puts his name on it as an original and no where acknowledges his source. And when he gets sued he deals with it behind closed doors and keeps it hush hush.

it took me a few sit downs to finish the article. that type of writing is surely not conducive to internet reading. and i do confess, i've let "alex" the mac voice read many an article to me, albeit, not that specific one!

there is no art
