a population comparison is easy enough to do. but i think that's not a good comparison. probably a better comparison would be to see how much money each country has going toward it's athlete's training, and how many people are in the "olympic training machine" in each country by event. Germany dominates all the sled track events because they focus so heavily on it and have a lot of people training in it.

look at India. I think it's the most populated country in the world, yet they don't dominate winter or summer olympics.
