so seth and daniel, you guys ride critical mass? explain to me why it isn't counter-productive. sure, we all want a safe driving/biking symbiosis. i just think critical mass only ends up pissing drivers off.

you think it only ends up pissing drivers off, but is that the same thing as being counterproductive?

sit ins during the civil rights movement pissed a lot of people off who all wanted a safe black/white people symbiosis in restaurants and other facilities, which to white people meant: no black people in my restaurant, let them go to their shitty restaurant or anywhere but here. the basic message was: go away. had they decided that because white people were angry about them breaking the rules by sitting in a white person's seat that it was a counter productive and futile method of nonviolent resistance, then Jim Crowe laws would still exist.

likewise is most people's ideas of a safe driving/biking symbiosis: no bikes or bikes riding in a torn up bike lane/anywhere but the road. the law says bikes have to ride in the road, so many drivers' ideas are uninformed.

there is not much a lone cyclist can do if stuck biking on a road with no bike lane, for example, so critical mass gathers to show drivers that there are a lot of bikers who, contrary to drivers' wishes, aren't going to stop riding their bikes, so they are demanding that their requirements be met.

I can't say if it's productive, because I have never seen a bike lane added to an existing road, but deciding that because it pissed some people off that it was counterproductive is a defeatist and helpless attitude.

Personally, though, I don't ride critical mass for cyclist's rights. I ride to be on a bike with friends, and the attitude of the few people who do ride it (10-15, at least during the summer) seem to have a similar goal of riding with friends on a friday evening.

Another parallel between sit ins and this Critical Mass video is the Civil Rights protesters' foresight to predict that cameras would be present at the sit ins, like cameras were present for this assault, and any violence inflicted upon them would be captured and broadcast through the media, ideally inciting the public enough to have them support overturning Plessy v Ferguson.
